The MRC/UVRI
Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988
from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the
research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary:
The
Buildings Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for the maintenance of the
entire Unit’s buildings and the cleaning and security of the station. The
incumbent will ensure that the Unit’s buildings are maintained in an excellent
condition by conducting regular general building maintenance inspections
including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting at the duty station and across
the field stations, and making sure that works which need attention are
identified and attended to in a timely manner for the smooth running on the
Unit Operations.
Key Duties
and Responsibilities: 
  • Update
    and maintain an inventory of building service installations of the unit
    and checks regular maintenance schedules for all of the Station including
    the senior staff Quarters and the guesthouses at all Stations. Is the
    contact person for all maintenance issues for senior staff quarters and on
    call to resolve them on time
  • Ensures
    that security fittings are working as required and reports any broken
    items to the security company for replacement
  • Prepare
    and present inspection reports on any malfunctions and overall condition
    of buildings fixtures and fittings on a regular basis for review by Senior
    Maintenance Engineer and the Director of Operations. Plans regular
    building maintenance up to 1 year in advance and raises job request forms
    where work has been sanctioned to go ahead.
  • Ensure
    all building fixtures and fittings are functional and in good order,
    including lights, door locks, exterior security lights, furniture, gardens
    and outside areas, toilets, generator buildings, flooring, CCTV cameras,
    windows and fittings, ac units, drains and guttering, dampness and general
    painting of walls and any other related areas.
  • Arrange
    for repairs and maintenance of all building services installations either
    through the Unit Building services Technician or through Contractors,
    having first discussed and agreed with SME and DOP
  • Supports
    in troubleshooting and bringing to the attention of the Electrical
    Engineer any electrical related problems, testing circuits, changing bulbs
    Etc. and any other installations that need attention.
  • Ensures
    quality fitting and metal work installations including any repairs at the
    unit, signs off repair work as being satisfactory and signs works
    completion notes.
  • Support
    the IT team, Electrical Engineer and HVAC Technician with fitting out
    mauls, piping, and drawing /laying of conductors/cables whenever needed.
  • Ensure
    minor paint works on walls, wood and metal surfaces are carried out as and
    whenever required. Oversee and ensure that the painting and redecoration
    of interior and exterior surfaces of all buildings meet required
    standards.
  • Oversees
    the cleaning company and MRC cleaning staff at the station and ensures
    timely quality cleaning of all areas all the time.
  • Attend
    to and supervise contractors who may be carrying out work during weekends
    or after working hours.
  • Fits
    door locks, light fittings and planes/hangs doors, replaces faulty locks,
    fits bat proofing in eaves of houses, General Painting, fixing of notice
    boards.
  • Supervises
    the security guards and ensures they do a professional job with sporadic
    checks to confirm deployments are as agreed
  • Identifies
    break downs in the security systems including access systems, electric
    fences etc. and advises management on necessary improvements required.
  • Receives
    and Processes all bills for utilities, security on site and ensures timely
    payments
  • (Power,
    Water, Garbage collection etc. in liaison with the FSA) and ensures
    medical waste is properly managed.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should hold a Higher Diploma in Civil and Building Engineering
  • Possession
    of a craftsmanship certificate from a recognised Technical institution,
    Vocational
  • Training,
    apprenticeship is also desired
  • Eight
    or more years’ experience of managing building maintenance in a busy
    manufacturing, institution, or hospital setting
  • The
    applicant must be computer literate and able to use Microsoft computer
    packages like excel,
  • Possess
    excellent communication skills in both oral and written English
Age: Above 35 years
