Manager
Africa is an International NGO founded in Kenya in 1957. Our Headquarters are
in Nairobi with major programmes in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and
Uganda, and two regional hubs in Southern and Western Africa based in South
Africa and Senegal Respectively. Working with and through African communities,
health systems and governments, Amref Health Africa aims to close the gap that
prevents people from accessing their basic right to health. Amref Health Africa

Assistant will technically support the development, contextualisation and
implementation of the Uganda Country office communications and advocacy
strategy. In addition, he / she will provide support to e-communications and
video activities for Amref Health Africa, which includes updating of the Amref
Health Africa websites, social media platforms and production/editing of Amref
Health Africa videos. Major emphasis will be on supporting documentation and
advocacy initiatives under the staying Alive Project.
Responsibilities:
- Actively support Country program staff and Staying Alive project
team to create understanding of the e-Communications and advocacy strategy
and the role of each towards its attainment. - In charge of designing Graphics for print publications
- Actively participate in developing advocacy materials e.g Policy
briefs, policy notes
- Take part in developing and implementing innovative ways of
positioning Amref Health Africa brand internally and externally - Support brand management, quality control and co-ordination for
all local communications materials - Identify, collect and generate ‘good news’ /human interest stories
from programmes/projects for internal and external use - Send regular updates, success stories, profiles and other
information for the web - Daily updates with engaging, interactive, posts on social media
platforms, including, but not limited to: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn - Identify opportunities for Amref Health Africa to raise its voice
and visibility through online and traditional platforms.
- Guide, mentor and train relevant staff on e-communications and media
engagement and effectiveness - Participate in coordinating a publications calendar
- Implement systems for evaluating the effectiveness of
e-communication activities
- Participate in writing and edit media releases, opinion articles
and other articles and pitch these materials to appropriate media,
including by proactively identifying opportunities - Develop and maintain a database and email distribution lists of
relevant eMedia contacts - Act as the Organisations media spokesperson from time to time as
delegated by the supervisor
- Maintain, update and enhance the organisations website through the
Communications and Advocacy Manager, by generating and sourcing content - Further develop and implement social media activities within the
country programme - Update and maintain Amref Health Africa in Uganda eCommunication
tools – the websites, newsletters including gathering and writing of
required content
- Render support in photography, filming and production of
documentaries, clips, for Amref Health Africa including editing of the
products - Coordinate content, editing, publication and distribution of
country office and stakeholder publications. - Support in preparing other publications, such as factsheets,
reports, submissions, technical papers, Abstracts and proposals, by
providing technical editing support and strategic advice - Support the staying Alive project advocacy initiative
documentation and other areas, as needed
Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the aforementioned AMREF Communications
Assistant vacancy should hold a Degree in Communications (Electronic and
Print Media) or related field. Possession of a Diploma in website
development or related field an added advantage - Certificate in scriptwriting and directing is an added advantage
- A minimum of two years’ experience in media advocacy, public
relations, communications, campaigning or journalism in an NGO setting. - Practical experience in website development and management
including updating and maintaining of eCommunication tools - Strong awareness and experience of e-communications and social
media platforms - Skills in developing, optimising and incorporating multimedia
content (e.g. video, webcasts and blogs) into websites - Photography skills and experience in filming and confidence using
an editing programme, preferably Final Cut Pro. - Possess the ability to use Adobe Creative Suite applications·
- Possession of design and publication skills is desirable
- Good understanding of communication technologies and social media
- Exceptional writing and verbal communications skills; good
photography and video skills are an added advantage - Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Possess the ability to work in a multicultural environment
- Excellent communications skills
