large cigarette manufacturers. Multinational manufacturers of consumer tobacco
products rely on independent merchants such as Alliance One to supply the
majority of their leaf. As a result Alliance One purchases tobacco in more than
45 countries and serves manufacturers of cigarettes and other consumer tobacco
products in over 90 countries.
Alliance One’s revenues are primarily
comprised of sales of processed tobacco and fees charged for related services
to manufacturers of consumer tobacco products around the world. They do not
manufacture cigarettes or other consumer tobacco products.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Management
    of the day to day buying of tobacco correctly according to leaf quality,
    in compliance with the marketing quality and integrity standards (free of
    NTRM, correct moisture content, no mould, uniform grading amongst others).
  • Ensure
    timely preparation and displaying of tobacco samples for farmers.
  • Ensure
    the provision of feedback to the growing team on quality and other leaf
    purchasing related issues.
  • Management
    of leaf re-handling / stripping operations in Go downs.
  • Assess
    crop profile before the buying season
  • Actively
    monitor purchased crop profile
  • Expeditiously
    follow up and regularly report on leaf buying key issues such as quality,
    styles, volumes, crop profile, leaf index amongst others
  • In
    charge of the implementation of planning and buying programmes.
  • Coaching
    and training of seasonal classifiers to ensure that individuals are
    motivated and perform at full potential
  • Take
    lead of  the buying team in order to
    ensure transparency in the buying operations for both AOTU and the
    farmers, and the achievement of the daily purchase volumes according to
    the defined buying plan.
  • Works
    closely between company and farmers on issues of tobacco buying.
  • Ensure
    compliance with the buying and storing processes and controls regarding
    documentation and operations
  • Responsible
    for the co-ordination of farmers and transporters at the buying station,
    minimising waiting time for the farmers.
  • Ensure
    the maximisation of buying line capacity in order to improve buying
    efficiency at a minimal cost.
  • Ensure
    full compliance with EHS standards
  • Liaise
    with growing team and farmers leaders in areas of tobacco to ensure proper
    grading, buying, and fulfilment of the delivery programmes
  • Actively
    co-ordinate transporters at the buying station to ensure fast off-loading
    and safety within the premises.
  • Liaise
    with Go down teams to ensure speedy evacuation and storage of the baled
    tobacco.
  • Liaise
    with Exports team in order to ensure proper buying criteria according to
    quality and customer expectations.
  • Technically
    support the Leaf Growing Team by ensuring consistency of approach and
    communication across local stakeholders groups, and particularly the
    farmers.
  • Positively
    influence the farmers by providing advice to the farmers consistent with
    the expected product standards by the Company.
  • Accurate
    identification of areas of improvements in the buying process related to
    efficiency improvement and loss reduction.
  • Improved
    controls and automation throughout the purchasing processes.
  • Introduction
    and development of leaf purchasing best practices.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate should hold a certificate in Agriculture
  • A
    minimum of two to three years’ experience in leaf growing.
  • Possess
    excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Self-confidence
    and drive.
  • Solid
    experience in leaf purchasing
  • Working
    knowledge of international grading/internal grades.
  • Possess
    excellent organisational skills
  • Fair
    understanding of leaf blends and blending techniques.
