education and in life, and empowered to better contribute to their community

About Education That Pays For
Itself:
Teach A Man To Fish has brought the pioneering ‘Education That Pays For
Itself’ model to more than 40 countries worldwide, reaching over 25,000
beneficiaries. We currently have partners in Central America, Africa and Asia
and provide training and capacity-building via competitions, workshops and
consultancy projects, as well as longer-term distance and field based support.
To-date we have supported over 2,000 schools which have generated over $2,000,000
in school business income. Teach A Man To Fish has been working in Uganda since
2008. Our current activities include supporting the development of school
businesses at a school in Kampala and the implementation our global business
competition, the School Enterprise Challenge. Over the next 5 years, we have an
exciting strategy for growth as we seek to reach 100,000 Ugandan students by
2020.
Job Summary: The Project
Officer will work in liaison with the Africa Regional Coordinator and an
international to support the development of Teach A Man To Fish’s activities in
Uganda. In particular, the Project Officer will be responsible for delivering
the School Enterprise Challenge (www.schoolenterprisechallenge.org) competition
in Uganda, as well as supporting an on-going partnership with Mackay Memorial
School in Kampala. As our work grows, the Project Officer will also help
research, plan and implement multi-school projects, a pilot of our corporate
franchise model and advocacy work with the Uganda Ministry of Education.   
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
1. Mackay Memorial College:
  • Deliver agreed exit strategy and ensure
    businesses are on a sustainable footing by May 2015
  • Support the Accountants for International
    Development volunteer to strengthen financial management and processes at
    each school business
  • Ensure narrative and financial reports
    collated according to donor and organisational deadlines
2. School Enterprise Challenge:
  • Deliver the School Enterprise Challenge
    competition in Uganda
  • Build and grow working relationships and
    liaising with schools participating in the School Enterprise Challenge
  • Design and deliver workshops and training
    to schools on Business Planning and Business Development
  • Process and mark business plan submissions
    and provide feedback
3. Multi-school projects and corporate Franchising:
  • Support Africa Regional Coordinator to
    build relationships with Ugandan partner NGOs to deliver multi-school
    project
  • Support Africa programmes team to plan and
    fundraise for a multi-school project
  • Support Africa programmes team to research
    corporate franchise model
4. Engagement with Ugandan Ministry of Education:
  • Assist the Africa Regional Coordinator to
    complete NGO registration process for Teach A Man To Fish Uganda
  • Support Africa Regional Coordinator to
    plan and implement advocacy strategy
5. Other:
  • Feed into weekly and monthly project reporting
    processes
  • Representing Teach A Man To Fish at
    external events and meetings
  • Support with administrative tasks

Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The candidate should hold a Bachelor’s
    Degree in relevant subject. Possession of a Masters Degree in relevant
    subject is an advantage
  • Previous experience of NGO or Education
    related work in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the
    Ugandan education context
  • Past exposure and experience in training
    adults and/or young people
  • Past experience of financial management or
    working with budgets is desired
  • Working knowledge of business is also
    highly desired
  • Significant experience of project
    research, planning and management is desired
  • Prior experience of narrative and
    financial reporting is an added advantage
  • Past experience of fundraising is highly
    desired
  • Possess the ability to integrate and work
    well within an international team
  • Entrepreneurial attitude
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
    skills
  • Excellent numerical skills
  • Good IT skills particularly word, excel
    and social media
  • Possess the ability to be highly flexible
    in different situations
  • Possess the ability to remain calm under
    pressure
