Health Organisation (WHO)
(WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United
Nations (UN) system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global
health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and
standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical
support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.
Information Assistant should ideally interpret and use WHO Staff Rules and
Regulations, Information notes, SOPs to disseminate relevant information to the
staff, partners and the general public to keep them fully informed on a wide
range of issues, activities and programmes of the organization.
The Public Information
Assistant will primarily ensure the implementation of the communication
activities in the following areas:-
- Prepares
and designs information for the WCO websites and social media such as Face
Book, Twitter, My Space and others for promotional needs of the
organization. - The
incumbent serves as a liaison and coordinator with the media and assists
in responding to their information needs in consultation with the
supervisor. - Plans
and coordinates implementation of activities to meet specific WCO needs
and objectives in media communications and public information. - Writes
and edits public information materials including news releases, articles,
photographs and newsletters/bulletins. - Offers
technical support to report on WCO various events such as meetings,
workshops, commemorative days as appropriate. - Assists
in assessing needs, planning and formulating the office’s communication
policies, strategies, and responses. - Performs
any other duties assigned by the WR.
- The
ideal United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) candidate should hold
a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, journalism, public relations or
a related field from a recognized University - Additional
qualifications in a health related field will be an added advantage - Proven
skills in drafting and editing required. - Possess
excellent communication & writing skills and demonstrated team work.
In addition the incumbent should have ability to understand and interpret
health figures, statistics and concepts and well as skills in various
computer packages. - The
incumbent is also expected to maintain computer skills including skills
Global Management System, to the standard of the Organization by self
study or in-house training. Knowledge of WHO rules, regulations, policies
and practices will be an asset. - At
least three years relevant working experience in health reporting, health
communication, public health or health promotion - Prior
experience in the UN and a sound knowledge of its rules, regulation,
procedures and practices as related to the work would be an asset. - Computer
literacy i.e. skills in word processing or other software packages, and
standard office equipment. Formal or self-training in the use of standard
office software. Training in Desktop publishing or other communication
systems an asset.
