The International Potato Center
(CIP) is a not-for-profit international agricultural research organization
supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR). CIP has a global mandate to conduct research on genetic resources of
potatoes, sweetpotatoes, and other Andean roots and tubers, crop genetic
enhancement and improvement, integrated crop management and sustainable
management of natural resources. CIP’s vision is to contribute from its areas
of expertise to the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in
particular those goals that relate to poverty, hunger, child and maternal
mortality, and sustainable development.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Work
    closely with the Assistant Sweetpotato Breeder (ASB) to coordinate and
    implement sweetpotato population breeding activities in ECA
  • Prepare
    samples for sweetpotato nutritional quality analysis
  • Actively
    facilitate sweetpotato germplasm exchange in ECA
  • The
    Technician will also organize and facilitate trainings for IMARS partners
    on sweetpotato breeding
  • Work
    under the supervision of the ASB/project leader, in collaboration with
    national programs and other partners in ECA to conduct on-station and
    on-farm sweetpotato trials, collect, analyze and interpret research trial
    data, and write reports and related documents. 
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree BSc in Botany or
    Botany/Zoology or Agriculture or Plant
    Breeding and Seed Systems or Genetics or Molecular breeding with at least
    two years’ experience gained from
    a reputable research institution or university
  • Good
    skills in experimental designs, data collection, analysis, interpretation
    and report writing
  • Appreciation
    for team work, excellent written and verbal communication skills in
    English.
  • Good
    working knowledge and practical background on root and tuber crops will be
    an advantage.
  • Ability
    and willingness to travel extensively
Age: Candidates should
not be above 35 years of age.
