About NARO:
The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) is established
by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate responsible
for the coordination and oversight of all aspects of agricultural research in
Uganda. The National Banana Research Programme (NBRP) based at the National
Agricultural Research Laboratories, NARL-Kawanda undertakes molecular biology
and biotechnology research activities to develop standard procedures and
technologies for enhancing Banana production in Uganda.
Job Summary: The
communication specialist will support the Banana21 team with implementing the
outreach strategy developed by the team in, as well as recommend new approaches
when needed.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • In charge of event planning and
    coordination between multiple stakeholders, making logistical arrangements
    for in-country and out-of-country speakers; and organizing the venue.
  • Ensure that all who speak on behalf of
    Banana21 are well briefed with the facts in advance of any engagement.
  • Design and follow a review process for all
    communications.
  • Share and disseminate appropriate Banana21
    project information with other Uganda biotech communicators. May also be
    expected to write newsletter articles; brochure copy; arrange news media
    interviews
  • Offer timely communication support for all
    field trials.
  • Stay in close, regular contact with the
    Project Team Management, and the Banana21 Communications Advisor.
  • Ensure Banana21 website contains
    comprehensive and current information and coordinate with QUT personnel.
  • Build and grow strong working
    relationships with the Ministry of Health to ensure a high level of
    cooperation, support and understanding regarding the vision for Banana21.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The applicant should have a minimum of
    four or more years in communications
  • Strong written and spoken communication
    skills;
  • Science knowledge and background
    preferred;
  • Excellent track record in planning event,
    writing articles and collaborative work.
