About NARO:
The National Agricultural
Research Organisation is established by the National Agricultural Research Act
2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for
publically funded agricultural research in Uganda. The organisation is composed
of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for
its day-to-day operations with semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research
Institutes (PARI’s) under its policy guidance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Directing
    and coordinating activities of agricultural worker, such as planting,
    irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, grading, payroll, and record
    keeping.
  • Responsible
    for planning finances and production to maintain farm progress against
    budgeted parameters;
  • Conducting
    soil analysis to determine the type and quantity of fertiliser application
    required for maximum crop production
  • Actively
    coordinating a wide range of farm preparation activities such as
    ploughing, farrowing, weeding and spraying as well as harvesting and
    post-harvesting activities.
  • Responsible
    for monitoring and documenting land use, fertilizer application as well as
    the quantity and quality of produce, whether crops or livestock 
  • Monitoring
    the development and production of hybrid plant varieties with high yield
    or disease and insect resistant characteristics according to research
    specifications
  • In
    charge of monitoring and inspecting cultivated fields to determine
    maturity of crops and to estimate potential yields or crop damage from the
    weather, pests or diseases. 
  • Understanding
    weather patterns and its implications and making contingency plans if the
    planned activities cannot be carried out;
  • Establishing
    marketing channels, conferring with buyers and arranging for sale of farm
    products
  • Protecting
    the environment and maintaining biodiversity.
  • Actively
    coordinating the maintenance and repair of farm buildings, machinery and
    equipment;
  • Responsible
    for monitoring and evaluating employee performance against set targets and
    objectives.
  • Also
    handling disciplinary cases and recommending appropriate disciplinary
    action.
  • Assessing
    training needs of technical services staff as well as implementing
    on-the-job training programmes aimed at equipping staff with the necessary
    knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors.
  • Actively
    participating in multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement and evaluate
    strategic management plans, in order to improve performance standards.
  • Developing
    appropriate networks with farmers and other stakeholders to ensure
    implementation of effective programmes that enhance organisational
    effectiveness.
  • Representing
    the institute in meetings, conferences and workshops and other forums to
    discuss developments in aquaculture.
  • Maintaining
    records of all aspects of operations in the farm and also preparing
    monthly progress reports and annual technical services reports showing
    achievements against planned targets as well as providing justification
    for performance variances.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicants for the NARO Agri-Business Manager Job vacancy should hold a
    Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Agri-business
  • At
    least five years working experience in related field of farm management or
    running of a profitable agricultural business enterprise.
  • Detailed
    working knowledge of farming principles, techniques, methods and systems;
    Community mobilization skills;
  • Possess
    the ability to work for long hours under minimum supervision;
  • Ability
    to provide training to farm workers on new methods and systems.
