(AfrII) has received funding from the Conservation International USA for the
implementation of the Vital Signs Project in Uganda.
Job Summary: The            Biophysical Technical Manager
supervises the collection of both bio-physical and environmental data using
weather stations, soil surveys, vegetation surveys, rapid assessment protocols
and stream monitoring devices. S/he also oversees the technical implementation
and logistics for gathering Biophysical ’metrics’ for Vital Signs. S/he must be
able to manage and coordinate field teams for accurate collection and uploading
of biophysical data.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Responsible
    for the management and supervision of field teams and daily biophysical
    data collection on vegetation, soil, rapid assessments, water quality,
    weather data and other measurements using data logging/recording devices;
  • Working
    closely with local officials to obtain relevant local/district permissions
    for the surveys;
  • Monitor
    and coordinate processing of soil and other samples work in the Afrll
    Laboratory; ensure proper sample labeling and packing as per protocols;
  • In
    charge of data-checking, quality control and ensuring transmission of high
    quality biophysical data into Vital Signs server using tablets;
  • Prepare
    weekly plans, weekly performance reports and field work budgets for the
    Biophysical team and submit to the Country Director for approval; and
  • Quickly
    report regularly on work progress, challenges and incidents to the Country
    Director, and ensure the biophysical team submits financial returns for
    all the advanced funds on time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate should possess an MSc in Agriculture, Natural Resources
    Management, Environmental /Ecological Sciences or related fields. The
    candidates holding BSc degree and have extensive experience in similar
    fields should also apply.
  • At
    least three years’ experience in conducting biophysical surveying work and
    managing field teams.
  • The
    Biophysical Manager must have the ability to work with a diverse set of
    both national and international partners
  • High
    degree of flexibility and ability to learn new skills and train others
    after identifying development needs
  • Skills
    in the use of tools like GPS, data loggers, tablets and others
  • Excellent
    negotiation skills for moderating communication within the team, with
    stakeholders and local government authorities
  • Good
    interpersonal skills to maintain cooperation with the field team
  • Possess
    the ability to work outside normal business hours as may be required in
    the field
  • Ability
    to travel long distances to access study points with equipment and samples
