Conservation International USA
(AfrII) has received funding from the Conservation International USA for the
implementation of the Vital Signs Project in Uganda.
will be responsible for the identification of plant species and description of
different vegetation types in the study area. The Botanist will collect record
and process plant species as per project needs. S/he will be required to assist
with measurements of biomass and soils, as well as Rapid Roadside Assessments
and processing soil and plant samples.
- Keenly
identify plant species (including trees, shrubs, herbs, and ferns) to the
level of species name, as required by the VS protocols and as per
scientific method of plant identification; - Describe
and differentiate various vegetation forms and canopy types/ height
classes during E-plot sampling and rapid road assessments; - In
charge of collecting unidentified plants, press them and send samples to a
National Herbarium for further identification; - Support
biophysical team to carry out other activities such as data entry, biomass
and soil sampling as directed by the supervisor based on project need; - Offer
technical inputs in the planning and weekly reporting to the supervisor; - Mentor
and train fellow project team members on plant species identification and
canopy classification.
- The
ideal candidate should possess a minimum of a BSc in Forestry, Botany,
Plant Taxonomy or any related field. MSc or Post graduate training in
taxonomy and the above fields is an added advantage - A
minimum of three or more years’ experience as a Botanist, and in natural
resource management - Past
experience in data collection in the fields of agriculture, soils and
vegetation, water and weather measurements is desired. - Flexibility
and ability to learn new skills - The
applicant must be skilled in the use of tools like GPS, data loggers,
tablets and others - Possess
excellent interpersonal skills to maintain cooperation with the field team - Ability
to work under pressure with minimal supervision - Ability
to work outside normal business hours and spending a lot of time in remote
areas as may be required in the field - Ability
to travel long distances to access study points with equipment and samples
