ZOA Uganda uses a community based approach  in rehabilitation and recovery program in the sectors livelihoods, WASH, education and economic development. Together with partners and research institutions we seek for new and improved livelihood opportunities for the communities in our program areas.
Job Summary: The Agricultural Advisor will be responsible for the development, monitoring and quality assurance for the livelihoods projects of ZOA Uganda in the North. Subsectors and themes of relevance include crop farming, agro-pastoralism, apiculture, food security, agribusiness value chains, local economic development, climate smart farming and disaster risk reduction. The Agricultural Advisor has his/her duty station in Kampala with an estimated 50% of the time on field missions to West-Nile, Acholi or Karamoja sub region.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Offer quality assurance on field implementation of agricultural and livelihoods projects and support & coach field staff to address constraints
  • Develop agricultural curricula for on-farm trainings and establish most appropriate extension models to reach out to farmer groups
  • Actively support development of program plans and program strategy towards food security, agriculture and livelihoods
  • Develop agribusiness and private sector development strategy and take initiatives to establish private partnerships with agro value actors and pilot agribusiness innovation
  • Offer an up-to-date information on developments in agro-business development in Uganda and define areas of intervention for ZOA Uganda
  • Support & coach establishment of M&E framework for livelihoods projects, development sampling tools, analysis of data and writing of monitoring reports
  • Steer the practical action research projects on farming systems and skills adoption and review  data analysis & reporting process of external surveys
  • Review and edit project implementation tools and donor progress reports
  • Take lead in developing project proposals in the agricultural and livelihoods sector and identify external partners to cooperate with in the process
  • Represent ZOA Uganda in stakeholder platforms to promote ZOA’s approach and network  with external agencies or donors to identify fund raising opportunities
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The candidate must also hold a good Master’s degree in relevant sector
  • At least four years of work experience in livelihoods or agricultural development, including at least one year in a field based position
  • Past experience and knowledge of farm business development and of linking farmers to markets
  • Technical knowledge of relevant sub sectors and themes, including: Food Security and livelihood assessments, Integrated Soil Fertility Management, the use of modern farm inputs including fertilizers and agrochemicals and farmer-based research & development.
  • The applicant should be a Christian adhering to the Christian identity of ZOA
  • The candidate is expected to fully support the vision and mission of ZOA
  • Past exposure and experience with rural extension models and subsistence farmer groups in East Africa
  • Proven strong writing and analytical skills
  • Good communication and facilitation skills
  • Excellent command of English
  • Critical mind-set and interest to explore innovations
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Able to take initiatives and work with limited supervision
  • Willingness travel frequently in Uganda
