SNV has been working in Uganda since 1989 supporting activities in 108 districts. Our focus is in three sectors: Agriculture; Renewable Energy; and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Our advisory services are in line with Ugandan policies and are tailored for specific Ugandan organisations and districts.
About Project:
Starting October 2014, SNV in partnership with a Dutch private sector firm will start 3-year Finance for Agriculture (F4A) programme in Uganda, with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands. The goal of the programme is to improve the attractiveness of the Uganda food and agriculture sectors for financing. The senior agrifinance advisor will be responsible for agrifinance advocacy part of the programme. S/he will establish a pipeline of bankable agribusinesses, demonstrate attractiveness of the sector and engage in high level advocacy and policy discussions with key agrifinance stakeholders to increase agriculture sector financing. At least 30% of targeted agribusinesses will be youth and women led enterprises.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Establish a pipeline of bankable agribusinesses demonstrating attractiveness of the sector,
  • Develop tools and support professional rating of agribusiness bankability and creditworthiness,
  • Develop curriculum and deliver training for preparing agribusinesses to become bankable,
  • Organize high profile agrifinance advocacy events together with agrifinance stakeholders,
  • Document agrifinance field evidence and publish agrifinance policy and practice briefs,
  • Carry out strategic policy dialogue and engagement with key finance sector players, regulator, policy makers and private sector agribusiness lead firms to lobby for increased financing to agriculture,
  • Ensure effective planning of resources, delivery of activities and reporting of project results,
  • Effectively manage the partnerships, external communications and visibility of the project,
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold a good Master’s degree in business administration, agriculture economics, commerce, finance or banking,
  • At least ten years relevant work experience in agriculture finance in Uganda or east Africa at senior level,
  • A minimum of five or more years of private sector experience working with agribusiness SMEs and lead firms,
  • Past exposure and experience with business planning and pre-investment due diligence and risk analysis,
  • Hands-on experience with high level policy engagement and evidence-based advocacy,
  • Prior experience in promoting youth and women led agribusiness enterprises,
  • High level of tact and diplomacy matched with ability to push for change,
  • Excellent skills in analytical writing, presentation, persuasion and negotiation,
  • Advanced level proficiency in MS word, excel, power point and social media.
