production has become an increasingly important activity in Uganda. In the last
30 years the pig population has increased from 0.19 to 2.3 million, and there
are more than 1 million households raising pigs. In 2011, Uganda had the
highest per capita consumption of pork in sub-Saharan Africa (3.4 kg/person per
year). The majority of pigs are kept by women in smallholder households, as
part of the large informal subsector, with limited access to technology
information and services. Other value chain actors are also constrained by
limited access to information, inputs and services. The goal of the
‘Smallholder Pigs Value Chain Development in Uganda Project’ (SPVCD) to improve
Livelihoods, incomes and assets of smallholder pig producers (particularly
women) in a sustainable manner through increased productivity, reduced risk and
improved market access in pig value chains.
Research Technician will provide effective technical support for the project.
- Collect
samples from pigs as needed and ensure proper transportation; - Receive,
store, package and arrange samples for transport to other laboratories; - Maintain
a database of samples received, processed and those sent to various
laboratories; - Process
and perform laboratory testing for various diseases agents including
microbiology, parasitology, serology and molecular biology under the
direction of the project coordinator; - Analyse
data and draft technical reports; - Carry
out epidemiological analysis using statistical tools; - Perform
any other duties related to the project activities that may be assigned by
the project coordinator.
- The
applicant should hold a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory
Technology or Veterinary Medicine. Possession of an MSc in Epidemiology or
Molecular biology would be a plus. - At
least three years’ experience in laboratory work (ELISA, parasitology,
bacterial culture and PCR). - Past
exposure and experience in sample collection from pigs, including blood,
serum, faeces and tissues. - Prior
experience on epidemiological surveys, data analysis and interpretation
using statistical tools, such as: STATA, SPSS, SAS. - Computer
literacy skills i.e. Proficiency in the use of MS Office packages, as well
as ability to develop databases and prepare required documentation from
them. - Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, which will be key to participate
effectively in a multicultural, multidisciplinary team. - Well
developed multi-tasking skills, with ability to coordinate, prioritize,
and organize workload, meet deadlines and work under pressure. - Ability
to analyse and synthesize information and to write reports clearly and
concisely. - Sound
judgment and initiative, and ability to work with a high degree of
independence. - Fluency
in oral and written English, and at least one of the following local
languages: Luganda, Luo or Lunyoro. - Willingness
to travel frequently within the country.
