About MUWRP:
The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit HIV
research program that was established in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of
understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation
for Advancement of Military Medicine Inc. of USA (HJF). The primary purpose of
MUWRP is to develop, evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate disease
threats of public health importance to Uganda. Activities include; vaccine development
and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda, conducting of
epidemiological and basic research and provision of HIV Treatment, care and
support and surveillance of influenza and other emerging infections.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the research team to draw blood
    from research participants per protocol through venipuncture or finger
    pricks.
  • Check test requisitions and bring
    discrepancies to study team
  • Responsible for correct identification of
    participant and proper labelling of sample collection
  • Explanation of procedures to help
    alleviate stress and anxiety regarding blood draw.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy stills and
    attention to cleanliness of work area
  • Carry out basic data entry and maintain
    laboratory related documentation
  • Responsible for preparing samples and
    related documentation for shipment to appropriate  labs.
  • Maintain standard operating, safety and
    infection control procedures
  • Maintain participant confidentiality.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The candidate should hold a Certificate in
    Medical Laboratory Techniques from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of two or more years of
    post-qualification professional experience.
  • Previous work in a research environment is
    added advantage
  • Possess the ability to maintain quality,
    safety, and/or infection control standards
  • Ability to understand and follow basic
    scientific research protocol and procedure
  • Technical writing skills and understanding
    of medical terminology/research
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal,
    and presentation skills
  • Computer literacy skills i.e. proficiency
    with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), email, internet.
