to safe, affordable water and sanitation services.
Job Summary: The WAU Senior Programme Coordinator –
Business Development will primarily be responsible for the development and
integration of entrepreneurial approach into water and sanitation programming
and delivery. The incumbent will also take lead in identifying appropriate
market-based approaches and supply-side activities to support WASH services.
The jobholder will also steer the efforts in local enterprise development,
quality improvement, and innovative mechanisms related to local markets, paying
particular focus to vulnerable groups, with the objective of strengthening
capacity for steering and implementation of market-based solutions for WASH
service delivery.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Grow the innovation in the water and
    sanitation business space in terms of financing, business models and
    technology in line with the overall vision and mission of WaterAid Uganda
    Country program.
  • Steer the development of a business development
    strategy for Sanitation Marketing. 
    Support the sanitation marketing research, to ensure the business
    development strategy is fit for purpose
  • Identify and coordinate all relevant
    business development service providers, entrepreneurs and state actors in
    planning and implementation of WASH as a Business.   
  • Oversee the WASH business development
    process in WaterAid Uganda and ensure that it remains targeted,
    communicated and relevant across sectors and to the needs of the different
    market segments.
  • Offer technical expertise and proficiency
    in developing WASH as a business approach and support its integration
    across the IWASH programme and projects. 
  • Ensure learning on WASH as a business
    happens and informs WASH programming within WaterAid Uganda and feeds into
    the on-going dialogue at the regional level and across the entire
    organisation.
  • Ensure that a good learning relationship
    and effective communication channels are developed between the Regional
    Technical Advisor and the Business Development Officer in WaterAid-UK.
  • Identify needs, opportunities, gaps, and
    constraints in potential WASH markets, models, business development
    agencies and entrepreneurs, and provide mentoring and capacity building
    support.
  • Carry out business landscaping studies,
    oversee the management of market analysis work and disseminate findings to
    inform business development.
  • Engage with local government to understand
    and if necessary improve the regulatory operating environment for emerging
    WASH businesses.
  • Document successes, failures and lessons
    learnt, and share knowledge internally and externally.
  • Actively collaborate with WaterAid
    strategic partners and other sector players to promote WASH as a business.
  • Establish and facilitate multi-stakeholder
    learning platforms within the National and District -wide programmes aimed
    at discussion of WASH as a business
  • Build and maintain relationships with key
    local entrepreneurs, and gain an understanding of the private sector in
    the country at all levels
  • Review opportunities for financing SMEs
    and developing market linkages that strengthen the relationship and
    cooperation with clients, WASH program partners and stakeholders.
  • Design an ongoing interaction/plan to work
    towards changing attitudes and building private sector oriented knowledge
    and skills for WaterAid, Partners, Entrepreneurs and the sector
  • Take the lead in business oriented
    proposal writing as well as support the development of mass communication
    materials: promotional material, videos, etc.
  • Actively participate and contribute to
    WaterAid and its partners participation in national WASH and international
    events were applicable and to develop and maintain external relationships
    and collaboration with other actors.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The applicant must hold a Masters or
    degree level in business marketing, social marketing, communication public
    health, social sciences, or related field.
  • Four years’ experiences in the business
    development field as well as an ability to effectively manage
    implementation of international grants in this field.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience
    working in the field of business development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of entrepreneurial
    approaches and market based services provision. Knowledge particularly on
    sanitation marketing approaches and messaging related to sanitation and
    hygiene will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership
    skills with commitment to WaterAid’s values and working styles.
  • Commitment to addressing issues of Equity
    & Inclusion and pro poor approaches.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal,
    networking and negotiation skills, including in a cross-cultural context
    as a team player.
  • Possess the ability to produce proposals,
    reports and other related business development informative documents; this
    will involve good skills in presentation, documentation and information
    management.
  • Past exposure and experience in the
    provision of technical advice to small and medium enterprises in Uganda as
    well as demonstrated success in managing a team of innovators.
  • Good working knowledge and skills in
    project planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E);
  • Experience working with local communities
    and government agencies at national, provincial, and local levels;
  • Advanced communication, negotiation, and
    listening skills
  • Working knowledge of entrepreneurial
    approaches and market based services provision
  • Excellent computer knowledge of packages
    like Excel, MS Word and Access, SPSS and MS Projects.
  • Strong writing skills, including
    experience in producing proposals, reports, and other informational
    documents.
