Shillings: 3,317,600 for 4 days a week
of minorities and promote cooperation between communities. Minority Realities
programme has been running from March 2013 and will expire in March 2016. This programme involves training EU-based
journalists, editors, photo-journalists and journalism students in the specific
development needs, progress and problems of minority and indigenous communities
in the global South. The programme is funded by the EU. It also comprises a
number of resources for journalists, such as publications and an online
interactive map linked to a citizen journalism website, the Minority Voices
Newsroom.
Officer will implement MRG’s Minority Realities Project) in Africa as well as render
technical support in programme design, fundraising and general media work for
our Africa Office.
- Be the lead trainer at these training
events, presenting the techniques needed to work as a journalist
sensitively covering minority, indigenous and development issues in the
region. - Intuitively research and maintain contacts
with Africa- based journalists – particularly those supplying EU media
outlets. - Keep detailed records of all media
coverage achieved by the project in EU/Africa. Keep London staff aware of
approaches to Africa/EU-based media so that they can collect examples of
resulting coverage. - Periodically visit minority and indigenous
communities across the Africa region to collect evidence/stories of
potential interest to the media. - Compile and submit your own media
materials to MRG’s media team in London (e.g. press releases, photos,
short films, including material for Minority Voices Newsroom) where urgent
minority issues arise in the Africa region. - Be willing and prepared to give interviews
on behalf of MRG on issues concerning minorities and indigenous peoples in
the Africa region. - Be willing and prepared to organise press
conferences and media launches on issues concerning minorities and
indigenous peoples in the Africa region - Fact-check and edit materials submitted by
partners to be uploaded on the Minority Voices Newsroom. - Support visits of EU based journalists to
communities to research stories and generate coverage. - Perform any other duties as delegated by
MRG’s Director of Policy and Communications.
- Personally respect and work towards full
implementation of MRG’s Gender and Equal Opportunities Policies in all the
work involved in this post. - The incumbent will be required to maintain
the pace of work which may at peak times be high, will need to meet
deadlines and manage several tasks at the same time.
Experience:
- The applicants must have a minimum of
three years’ experience as either a journalist or a media officer or
similar post with a particular focus and successful track record in
achieving multimedia (print, broadcast or online) coverage in
international media. - Demonstrated understanding of the
importance of achieving balanced coverage, showing sensitivity towards
issues concerning minorities and indigenous peoples plus the importance of
avoiding sensationalising stories. - Detailed knowledge of debates about
minority and indigenous rights regionally and internationally. - Past exposure and experience in research
and writing for publications on minority and indigenous peoples’ rights
issues, preferably in Africa. - Good working knowledge of minority and
indigenous communities in Africa, some knowledge of debates about minority
and indigenous rights regionally and internationally. Detailed knowledge
of minority and indigenous communities in Africa. - Some experience of liaising with or
working in Community-Based Organisations or NGOs in Africa. - Excellent communication skills, including
excellent writing skills and presentation skills in English. - Possess the ability to work in
multicultural teams. - Good working knowledge of gender issues
and willingness and ability to mainstream in all work. - Ability and willingness to travel.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to
network and nurture contacts. - Fluent written and spoken English.
- Substantial experience of working with
local, regional and international media including EU-based media is
desired - Past experience of making short films, audio
and/or photography is an advantage - At least 3 years’ professional experience
working in human rights and/or development at an international level. - At least 3 years’ experience of project
management, budgets, logistics, monitoring, planning and evaluating (or
the equivalent experience as a journalist).
