Job Summary: The role of the research analyst is to gather and analyse data and interpret this for major reports in the East African region. It will also include leading on specific programmatic/research assignments. This will also mean contributing to the broader support and milestone achievement of other programmes within DI such as Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA), aidinfo and consultancy. The analyst will mainly work on aid statistics, domestic resources, national and sub national budgets, other resource flows, capacity building, etc. The incumbent will mainly work within the Africa hub team but will also work across the other DI teams such as GHA, aidinfo and the DI UK analysts and consultancy team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Technical Duties:
  • Gather and evaluate data on resources in the East Africa region, Conduct analysis and interpretation
  • Contribute to the written and/or graphic format of data which includes producing high quality policy brief and research papers on key themes and issues in East Africa
  • Build and maintain on-going relationships with key stakeholders in government ministries, research organisations, NGOs and other relevant organisations in East Africa
  • Promote ongoing work through writing of blogs and opinion pieces for regional newspapers/magazines
  • Offer helpdesk support and response to helpdesk requests as and when required
  • Build and maintain personal professional development and personal development plans
  • Be willing and committed to take on new work as and when required and to be proactive as well as providing analytical support to UK data team
2. General Responsibilities:
  • Be aware of and take personal responsibility for any health and safety issues and obligations
  • Uphold all aspects of Company policies and procedures and legal requirements in relation to personal conduct
  • Organize and prepare for and engage in 1:1 meetings and performance management appraisals
  • Maintain personal professional development and personal development plans
  • Be willing and committed to take on new work as and when required and to be proactive
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should preferably be educated to post graduate degree level in Economics, International Development, Agricultural Economics, Political Science or any related subject.
  • A minimum of two years’ practical experience in development programmes implementation, with practical experience in data analysis
  • Good knowledge and understanding of  government institutions, donor institutions and mechanisms in which they work in, and a wide range of actors across the development sector such as NGOs, multilateral and bilateral agencies.
  • Extensive experience in economic/data analysis, preferably having worked with a national or regional organisation, perhaps with some evidence of publishing;
  • Excellent quantitative skills for analysis; highly numerate with an aptitude for analysing numerical data
  • Ability to work independently and conduct high quality research involving a combination of internet and desk-based research
  • Highly creative writing and presentation skills; an ability to convert numerical data and research outcomes into a policy messages and other meaningful formats
  • Highly organised with good time keeping skills
  • Practical understanding of the dynamics in international development with ability to relate key development indicators to countries who are in a constant stage of change
  • Excellent analytical skills; competent with data packages such as STATA and advanced
  • MS Excel  
  • Knowledge of a second working language such as French
  • A clear and confident communicator who is innovative in how to deliver key messages and engage
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Have a learning and enabling quality with a proven ability to lead and manage teams
