The Corporate Affairs function exists to effectively support Senior Management in the development and delivery of Corporate internal and external communications (including messages, content, events and delivery), Community Investment and in the assessment and management of Public Policy issues (including potential brand and reputation issues) within Uganda.
 Job Summary: The Community Investment Manager (AVP) will be responsible for the;
  • Implementation of Barclays Community Relations Programme across the designated country, supporting Barclays reputation in the community and delivering Barclays community investment programme across the region
  • Server as the ambassador for the Group in the community, raising the profile of the programme with key Internal and external audiences; staff, customers, shareholders, the public and opinion formers
  • Through the programme, bring real and lasting benefit both to the community and to Barclays
  • Responsible for delivering PR for all community projects in country
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Delivering Barclays Regional Community Relations Programme (45%):
  • Supporting the Country Head of Corporate Affairs, and regional management to develop and implement both the in-country and Barclays global community investment strategy
  • Work with Community Investment Governance forums to plan, implement, and follow up on community investment strategy.
  • Oversee relationships with charitable partners (both global partners and those selected at country level) to ensure successful delivery of projects, including driving of profile and employee participation.
  • Successfully manage the special funds.
  • Take responsibility for agreed country KPIs and MI and report quarterly to the regional Head of Community Investment
  • Taking responsibility for evaluation and measurement  of  donations and sponsorships
  • Work in liaison with the regional Head of Community Relations and the Global community investment team to achieve Global partnership objectives – including employee volunteering groups. Ensure MI is provided to all stakeholders on a timely basis.
  • Working closely with Country Head of Corporate Affairs to ensure that all financial inclusion objectives are achieved.
  • Working closely with Head of CR and the global environmental team to ensure that all environment projects achieve their objectives.
  • Responsible for managing and delivering PR for community programmes for the country for all projects.
  • Drafting and gaining agreement to content of communications in line with country community relations strategy & aligning messages with Group community messages working closely with local and regional communications teams.
2. External engagement (25%)
  • Responsible for raising the profile and awareness of the community relations externally with the media, external stakeholders and other key opinion formers.
  • In charge of identifying and organizing external events to promote Barclays community relations programme with the media, MPs and other key opinion formers.
  • Creating and developing a favourable public image for Barclays in the defined local community
  • Responsible for delivery of media partnerships including media exploitation
  • Represent Barclays at external community events to promote Barclays community programme
  • Build, grow and maintain relationships with key regional business influencers and major NGOs through programme of meetings, networking events and activity
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to the business on any sponsorship opportunities that may arise through key regional business influencers.
  • Providing networking opportunities for the business with key regional business influencers.
3. Internal engagement (25%)
  • Working closely with local teams to understand commercial objectives and seek ways to support those objectives, including employee engagement, team building, local stakeholder/KBI engagement and winning of business.
  • Raise awareness amongst employees in the Region of the community programme and encourage them to take full advantage of the schemes available and encourage them to act as advocates
  • Build and grow employee engagement in Make a Difference Day and other Community engagement programmes
  • Approving applications for grants for employee volunteering activities.
  • Recruit and manage a network of community champions, with support from the Community Officer
  • Managing Barclays Community Partners Days once a year, a day where we bring all our partners together to meet staff.
  • Support the selection of applicants for the Chairman’s Awards, in support of all business units
4. Other (5%)
  • Support the Head of Corporate Affairs on a broad range of issues as may be assigned from time to time.
  • Acting as the key point of contact for Sustainability issues within the country, representing the Bank at external forums and responding to various requests from the community for assistance as appropriate.
  • Taking responsibility for reconciling cost centre account lines

  • Significantly contribute to the development of a strong culture within the Marketing, Communications, Citizenship and Public Affairs (MCCPA)function, to position the Bank as an employer of choice.
  • Contribute to a ‘one team’ ethos working with Community Affairs colleagues both centrally and regionally
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The candidate will have experience of working within the banking industry.
  • Skills in developing and managing strong business and stakeholder relationships including vendor management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including strong presentation skills
  • Strategic approach with a focus on the ‘bigger picture’
  • Strong team working skills, ability to operate effectively in a “virtual” team working environment
  • Strong project management, organisation and co-ordination skills
  • Strong planning, budgeting and strategy formulation experience
  • Business and organisational understanding
  • Skills in creativity and / or innovation
  • Development Studies/Social work knowledge/qualification is highly preferred
  • Organisational control procedures, a working knowledge of Anti bribery and Corruption policies.
  • Working knowledge of how to protect the reputation of the brand.
  • Corporate/Organisational communication
  • Skills in Crisis management (in the PR and Communications context) are advantageous
  • The applicant should have a comprehensive understanding of global development issues with special reference to Africa.
  • Past experience of working in a multinational, multi-segment, environment with matrix reporting.
  • Good awareness of cultural differences and varying legal/regulatory environments.
  • Prior experience in community affairs engagement.
  • Possess the ability to advise at senior executive level on communication and Public Affairs/Relations  and community issues
  • Proven ability to manage various activities / projects at the same time, whilst delivering quality work within stringent timelines
  • Past exposure and experience in event planning
