Job Summary: The IT
Operations Manager (Opco) will be responsible for the smooth operation of the
Smile Information Technology Systems within the Uganda Operation. This covers
all systems utilised by Smiles’ staff (desktop computing environment, PABX and
associated applications) as well as the systems providing end user services on
Smiles commercial IP network.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the applications
operations for all the Company’s applications including portals, web
services, databases and other platforms; - Infrastructure
operations for all the Company’s IT infrastructure including servers,
storage and the Company’s staff laptops; - Backup management of
IT applications; - System failure
diagnosis and restoration; - In charge of troubleshooting
reported user problems and working with the Smile Group teams to
constantly improve software releases; - Capacity planning and
implementation for additional IT infrastructure; - Preventative
maintenance of hardware and operating systems; - System performance
monitoring and optimization; - Day-to-day system
administration for users, passwords and general configuration; - Following maintenance
schedules and operations checklists as provided by the Smile Group; - Monitoring system
uptime and performance statistics to ensure data integrity and correct KPI
measurement; - In case of system
issues occurring outside of normal working hours, available on standby at any
time, other than when on formal leave; - Ordering, setting up
and maintain staff laptops and Windows operating systems; - Aiding staff in
troubleshooting laptop problems; - Being an expert in
Smile-specific applications used by staff, particularly configuration and
training of staff to an intermediate level; - General IP network
configuration and maintenance; - Local testing and
implementation of new IT software releases from Smile Group; - Learning and
constantly improving knowledge and understanding of Smile’s systems
architecture; - Status, issue and risk
reporting into reporting lines;
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must possess a
bachelor’s degree in IT and Computer related field - Work experience & skills
- Seven or more years’ relevant experience
(at least 3 years at supervisory/management level) - Extensive database knowledge (MySql)
- Experience in UNIX/LINUX Operating Systems
- Experience in Windows 2003/XP, MS Office
Suite (Office 2007/2010), Active Directory basic admin, troubleshooting and
networking (switches, patching etc.) - Experience working with Open Source
Technologies is an advantage - Familiarity with ITIL, Document Management
Systems and end user training - Personal qualities & behavioural
traits (Essential) - Hands on approach. Ability and willingness
to roll up sleeves and work on trouble shooting issues - Strong communication skills and ability to
work with cross-functional teams - Excellent analytical skills – strong
troubleshooting and problem solving skills - Ability to work with, supervise and manage
a team of IT professionals.
