About ILRI:
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for better and more sustainable use of livestock. Over the past two decades pig production has become an increasingly important activity in Uganda. In the last 30 years the pig population has increased from 0.19 to 2.3 million, and there are more than 1 million households raising pigs. In 2011, Uganda had the highest per capita consumption of pork in sub-Saharan Africa (3.4 kg/person per year). The majority of pigs are kept by women in smallholder households, as part of the large informal subsector, with limited access to technology information and services. Other value chain actors are also constrained by limited access to information, inputs and services. The goal of the ‘Smallholder Pigs Value Chain Development in Uganda Project’ (SPVCD) to improve livelihoods, incomes and assets of smallholder pig producers (particularly women) in a sustainable manner through increased productivity, reduced risk and improved market access in pig value chains.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Develop information, communication pathways and methodologies for a variety of partners and stakeholders for the Uganda pig value chain project;
  • Write, edit, format or produce communication and knowledge sharing products in different formats for different audiences (researchers, policy makers, media, extensionists, etc), following ILRI guidelines;
  • Make certain that all products (photos, video, documents, presentations, etc) of the project are captured described, and published on ILRI- supported platforms;
  • Actively facilitate communications and knowledge sharing among project members and partners/stakeholders, producing regular project updates and documenting and sharing insights and results as needed;
  • Consolidate lessons learnt and research outputs for sustainable pig value chain development by the ILRI-led Uganda pig projects and processing of customer-specific knowledge materials;
  • Work in liaison with the communications contact person in ILRI to relay news updates as pertains the ILRI-led Uganda pig value chain project;
  • Produce communication products that will help strengthening the activities of the Uganda pig value chain advocacy groups
  • Disseminate insights and contribute to the wider ILRI communications and knowledge management team.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in Communications and/or Management of Agricultural Information Systems.
  • At least five years’ experience working with an array of agricultural research and development partners preferably in Uganda or other developing countries.
  • Highly proficient in the use of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English including editing skills and the ability to write clearly and concisely and synthesize information.
  • Proven interpersonal, cross-cultural and facilitation skills, including ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to develop strong and effective working relationships with partners.
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills and the ability to independently plan and coordinate given assignments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
