humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most
prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which
was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students
who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The College soon began
offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary
Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center
for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started
developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school
certificate courses. In 1949, it became a University College affiliated to the
University College of London, offering courses leading to the general degrees
of its then mother institution.
Summary: The Labour
Officer / Industrial Relations Officer will
implement Labour Relation policies of unionized staff in the University in line
with Labor Laws
- Develop
and implement a mechanism for conflict resolution in line with Human
Resources polices and labour laws. - Review
and implement Human Resources policies in line with the Labour Laws. - Develop,
review, recommend and implement policies on sexual harassment in line with
Human Resources policies. - Develop,
review and recommend a policy on sports/recreation for staff in line with
Human Resources policies. - Implement,
monitor and update staff leave schedules in line with Human Resources
policy. - Handle
staff grievances in line with set standards and guidelines - Liaise
with the University Hospital in handling Workman’s Compensation
Skills and Experience:
- The
applicant should possess a Masters’
degree in Human Resource Management or Organizational Psychology or MBA
(Human Resource option) OR a
Masters degree with a postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource management
from a recognized Institution/University OR An Honors Bachelors degree in Human Resource management or
Business Studies or Industrial Psychology or Arts/Social Sciences or
Education or its equivalent from recognized institution/university - At
least three years of HRM work experience in a large complex and reputable
organization handling labour matters - Computer
literacy skills - Good
interpersonal and negotiation skills - Proven
Counseling Skills - Working
Knowledge of Labour Laws - Familiarity
with the Employment Act (2006) of Uganda - Knowledge
of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act - Knowledge
of other Labour Laws
