About Monitor:
- Provide operational leadership for the Life magazine in the Sunday Monitor in achieving clear brand preference for Monitor in the ‘soft-side’ areas of the newspaper particularly: people, lifestyle, human interest, society, entertainment, humour, travel, family, etc.
- Develop story ideas and assign reporters/correspondents
- Debrief reporters on assignments being done Be the lead writer for Life magazine and write at least two cover stories every month
- Create a high quality, high impact trend of sustained initiatives in the content area that positions Life magazine as a complete substitute to the front page and the political sections of the newspaper as a reason for Monitor tube bought and read.
- To achieve high quality writing, editing and design quality as well as creating opportunity for marketing support to be planned by writing, editing and grouping articles well ahead of competition.
- Collaborate with the Features editor — weekend and the Managing Editor — Weekend to ensure that Life magazine develops such focus and core strength as will give them clear leadership in brand awareness, appeal and preference, reflected in growing circulation sales.
- Ensure that the material written reflects a thorough understanding of the Monitor’s style of journalism as defined in the editorial policy guidelines and objectives, the house style and the journalistic code of ethical journalism.
- Monitor copy for loaded language, insufficient reporting, and libelous statements.
- Enforce features deadlines.
- Chair weekly meetings with features winters and reporters to plan and brainstorm on features ideas.
- Gradually build contacts with sources of features.
- The applicant should possess a University Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from an accredited institution.
- Five or more years journalism experience and demonstrated writing and editing experience in a newsroom, with strong emphasis on features writing and editing
- Possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues and/or depth of knowledge in features.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with good understanding of editorial practices, writing and editing requirements in a busy newsroom
- Must have a good eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
- Good organizational skills and ability to work effectively with the team and collate material from multiple sources
- Forward thinking and able to strategize and develop new ideas to grow the magazine
- Ability to track, review and manage team performance effectively
- Strong interpersonal skills & communication skills
