Job Summary: The Features
Writers will cover features events, write and submit factual and balanced stories
for publication within the set deadlines. This job entails going out on
assignment as well as initiating news features.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develops,
reports and writes feature stories for the assigned title /beat in finished
form, so that no major rewrite is required or no extensive
additional report is needed . - Takes
notes on location , carries out interviews , checks facts and tape records
as the case may be ; writes features on own initiative , choice and judgment
or at the direction of the features editor. - Ensure
materials written comply to the Monitor’s style of journalism as defined
in the editorial policy guidelines
and objectives, house style and journalistic code of ethical journalism - Build
contacts list and demonstrate value with consistent and exclusive reports
or information. - Primarily
responsible for the correctness of facts, content and style of his / her
news materials. - Follow
features news lead and maintain contacts with sources. - Researches
and provides background information to make complete copy. - Work
closely with photographers from whom to order pictures on issues he/she
covers. - Briefs
the features editor on stories gathered and writes the selected ones within
set deadlines. - Perform
independently and under supervision in accordance with general principles
and directives. - Attend
meetings on features desk and contribute ideas.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
- Basic
University Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from an
accredited institution and/or professional qualification in
journalism. - 1-3
years daily newsroom experience with emphasis in writing and or reporting. - Broad
knowledge of local and regional issues with in-depth knowledge in beat
speciality. - Passion
for writing coupled with a keen news sense. - Ability
to work accurately and under pressure - Deadline
driven - High
degree of professionalism - Computer
literate - Detail-oriented.
- Good
interpersonal and communication skills. - Multi-tasking
- Excellent
grammar, spelling and punctuation skills.
