Job Summary: With an imminent global trend for declining voice revenues, operators need to focus on introduction of new and innovative services to counteract this decline in revenues. MTN Uganda has as a result, invested in new mainstream technologies to deliver data services viz; CDMA, WiMAX and 3G. Proper delivery of services off these access technologies requires dedicated resources to design, plan, operate and optimize these networks so that a high quality and reliable telecom infrastructure and service platform instigated, in fulfillment of the overall organizational vision and mission. Currently Radio Planning and optimization uses most of the resources to design and optimize the 2G and 3G networks. This additional headcount request is to allow Radio Planning and optimization to handle design, commissioning and optimization of Wi-Fi, WiMAX and CDMA networks; which are now being tracked as part of the engine room Programme.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Carry out planning of Wi-Fi, WiMAX and CDMA sites getting inputs from sales and marketing.
  • Carry out single sight verification and drive tests of Wi-Fi, WiMAX and CDMA sites.
  • Monitor & optimize Wi-Fi, WiMAX and CDMA sites.
  • Provide Radio Network Planning (RNP) input to Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX projects as may be required from time to time.
  • Participate in commissioning of CDMA sites by uploading BTS configurations data using Air bridge tool.
  • Participate in commissioning of WiMAX sites by ensuring element discovery in AlvariSTAR NMS.
  • Recommend required actions for optimizing the Wi-Fi, CDMA, and WiMAX radio access networks.
  • Performing Radio Network Planning (RNP) simulations for Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX.
  • Produce weekly and monthly statistics performance reports for the Wi-Fi, CDMA, and WiMAX access networks.
  • Ensure the integrity of the planning data for Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX.
  • Engagement/ supervision of suppliers/sub-contractors for Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX.
  • Accurate initiation and follow up of work orders related to Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX. Projects/optimization works.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
The applicant must possess the following:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Telecommunications engineering.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in telecom with reasonable exposure in radio planning and optimization, especially in wireless technologies like Wi-Fi, CDMA and WiMAX.
  • Must be familiar with radio network configuration and performance monitoring basics.
  • Excellent team player with good interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driving license with at least one year of driving experience.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Time management.
  • Hard working and ready to make frequent upcountry trips.
  • Ability to multi task
  • Excellent computing skills
