Job Title: Quality and Safety Officer
Location: The position will be based in Entebbe but with occassional visits to the field stations in Kampala, Masaka and Kyamulibwa.

About MRC / UVRI:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency.
The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and practice, and that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
The Unit is based at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe and invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill positions of:
Job Summary: To manage all aspects of the laboratory Quality Assurance programme as well as the health and safety function, including security, across the operations of the MRC stations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
i. Ensure that the laboratory quality management system is established, implemented and maintained in accordance with GCLP or ISO 15189 standards.
ii. Manage the laboratory internal audit program
iii. Coordinate laboratory accreditation and external audit activities
iv. Train personnel on quality management system activities.
v. Reports on the performance of the laboratory quality management system to senior management for review and as a basis for improvement of the quality management system.
vi. Develop, implement and monitor the Unit’s health and safety continuous improvement plan in line with MRC 5 years strategic approach
vii. To assist the Unit in complying with health and safety legislation and or regulations with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect staff and visitors
viii. Indentify health and safety training needs that develop training programs which target appropriate staff.
ix. To investigate, report and keep records of all work related accidents monthly to senior management
x. To control and coordinate ant H&S audits
xi. To oversee security arrangements at the Unit and staff housing facilities and liaise directly with the security firm providing these services.
xii. To represent the Unit on the UVRI safety committee.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· Degree in Science field. Qualification in health and safety or related field.
· Training and certification in QA/QC management.
· Post graduate training laboratory safety and QA/QC management is of an advantage.
· Substantial QA/QC and safety experience in health research organization or health related industry.
· Supervisory skills in similar organization
· Safety, QA/QC knowledge in providing quality services in research and service delivery with continuous improvement and satisfaction.
· Knowledge and skills in health safety within the HIV/AIDS clinical research organization.
Terms and conditions:
Successful applicants will serve a 2 years contract with a possibility of renewal inclusive of 6 months probation.
